Clearwater Beach is famous for its soft, sparkling white sand. But the sand isn’t just beautiful; it packs easily and holds moisture, which makes it perfect for building sand castles!
On Saturday, Ron and I took our boat to Clearwater Beach to see the Sugar Sand Festival, a 10-day beach party showcasing a professional sand sculpting competition. This year’s sand sculpture theme was “FantaSEA, a Magical Adventure Above and Below the Sea.” Ten master sculptors had worked for days before the festival to create incredible works of art, using nothing but sand, water and ordinary household tools. I loved the variety of real and mythical sea creatures, from the whimsical SpongeBob SquarePants to ship wrecks and pirates to a room-sized mermaid. My favorite sculpture was Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean.
The exhibit took less than an hour to walk through (even with me stopping to enjoy all the amazing details), but between the sculptures, lunch at Frenchy's Saltwater Cafe and a boat ride, it was a great way to spend a day on the water.

Travel Tips: The Sugar Sand exhibit is open daily through April 23 from 10 AM to 10 PM. In addition to the sculptures there are street performances, food and craft vendors, sand sculpting classes, cornhole tournaments and even fireworks. See the festival’s website for a schedule of events. http://sugarsandfestival.com
They look great in your pictures. My emotional favorite is the U.S. Navy sculpture.
