On Sunday, Ron and I drove to Venice for the Chalk Festival, a 4-day outdoor event celebrating pavement art. The festival was moved from Sarasota to Venice a few years ago to accommodate its growing popularity. This was the first time we’d been to the festival since it moved to its new location on the grounds of the Venice Airport.
The theme this year was “Garden of Wonders: a tribute to the marvels of the natural world and the human imagination”. Many of the artists were still working on their pieces so we got to see the art in progress. I loved the way that some of the artists incorporated black and white into their artwork. The monochrome sections made the other colors seem even more vibrant.
A large area of the festival grounds was dedicated to interactive 3D art. Even though these images were drawn on completely flat pavement, they gave the illusion of three dimensions if viewed from just the right angle. The festival staff even encouraged people to become part of the 3D scenes. It was fun sitting in the jaws of the giant shark. :-)
The Chalk Festival is one of the largest gatherings of pavement artists in the world, with artists from over a dozen countries and around the US. What incredible talent!
