Social Distancing at the Florida Botanical Gardens
After working from home for a month and barely leaving the house except to buy groceries or to take a short walk around the neighborhood, I badly needed a change of scenery. I decided to visit the Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo. Although the Welcome Center and indoor facilities at the gardens are currently closed because of COVID-19, the grounds are open.
I parked at the entrance next to the butterfly garden and as soon as I stepped out of my car, I could feel my spirits lifting. Butterflies danced around the ixora plants and a bunny hopped onto the path in front of me. There were arbors draped with coral honeysuckle vines and hedges of sweet-smelling gardenias. It was hard to tear myself away from the butterfly garden, but I was glad I did because the rest of the park was just as beautiful. Fountains and sculptures were scattered throughout the gardens. In the tropical fruit garden, there were pineapples and banana trees. From the bridges over McKay Creek, I could hear ospreys overhead and alligators grunting to each other. There were butterflies everywhere.
I wasn’t the only person who had discovered this peaceful oasis, but with 30 acres of pathways, it was easy to keep a safe distance. I spent about two hours soaking in the colors and smells and sounds before heading back. Home may be sweet, but it was good to see some of the world outside my front door.
Travel tips: The Florida Botanical Gardens are open daily from 7 AM to 5 PM, but due to the changing situation it’s best to check their website for the latest information before paying a visit. Admission and parking are free. The park’s Facebook page has a scavenger hunt that you can download here.

What a great break!I love the bunny.
ReplyDeleteI had a great walk-around the Norfolk Botanical Gardens this week too. Any readers close to this area, I highly recommend a visit, especially checking out the Lego sculptures, and highly recommend coming early in the day.
I agree about arriving early. Fewer people and also, it's Florida so it gets hot. :-)
